Booking fees in South Africa range from a few thousand rand for an emerging act to R200,000 or more for a headline name. This guide shows typical fees for each type of act, the costs that sit on top of the fee, how deposits work, and how to build a realistic entertainment budget.

What a booking fee covers

The booking fee pays for the performance you agree: the act, the date and the length of the set. It usually does not include travel, accommodation, the sound and stage equipment, or VAT. Those are quoted separately, so always compare the total, not just the headline fee.

Reported examples show how quickly fees rise. In 2025 Sunday World reported a R60,000 fee for a well known Amapiano DJ duo, and a R180,000 fee, with a R90,000 deposit, for a veteran Afro pop star. In 2023 TimesLIVE reported that a popular young soul singer charges R200,000 to perform at a wedding. Fees change over time, so always get a current quote.

Costs on top of the fee

  • Travel. Flights or transport for the artist and team when the event is outside their city.
  • Accommodation and meals. Common for out of town and late night bookings.
  • Rider. The artist’s list of requirements, such as a dressing room, drinks and meals.
  • Sound, stage and backline. Bands may need drums, amplifiers and a stage. One agency rate card lists backline from around R5,000 to over R25,000.
  • Lighting. Stage and dance floor lighting.
  • VAT. 15% when the artist or agency is VAT registered.
  • Overtime. Charged per extra hour or set.
  • Security and support acts. Common for headline names.

A real example: in 2022 Sunday World reported a booking where the performance fee was R40,000, with R1,500 for accommodation and R8,000 for transport on top.

How deposits work

In the wider industry, a 50% deposit to secure the date is common, with the balance paid shortly before the event. The trouble is that a deposit paid straight to an artist or agent is hard to get back if something goes wrong, and South African news regularly carries stories of disputes over unreturned deposits.

GigFinder works differently. You pay the full fee upfront, but it is held in escrow, not paid to the artist, until you confirm the performance by sharing a 4 digit code. Cancel within 48 hours of paying and you get it all back; after that you get 85% back. Read more in how escrow protects your booking.

How to budget for entertainment

  1. Decide which moments need entertainment: arrival, dinner, speeches, the dance floor.
  2. Choose the type of act for each moment, then the tier that fits your budget.
  3. Ask every act for a total quote: fee, travel, sound, lighting, overtime and VAT.
  4. Keep 10% to 15% of the entertainment budget aside for extras on the day.
  5. Book early. The best acts for December and peak wedding weekends go first.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to book a famous artist in South Africa?

Reported fees for well known South African artists range from about R25,000 to R200,000 or more per show, before travel, accommodation and the rider. Fees change with an artist’s popularity, so always ask for a current quote.

What is an artist rider?

A rider is the artist’s list of requirements beyond the fee, such as sound equipment, a dressing room, meals, drinks and transport. Agree it before you pay, because it can add real cost.

Do artists charge VAT?

Artists and agencies that are VAT registered add 15% to their fee. Ask whether a quote includes VAT so you compare like for like.

Do I have to pay a deposit on GigFinder?

No separate deposit. You pay the full booking fee upfront and it is held in escrow until you confirm the performance with your 4 digit code.

Can I negotiate an artist’s fee?

Often, especially for weekday dates, longer bookings or venues close to the artist. You can send a counter offer in the GigFinder chat.
